The place
Malad, on the river side of Calapan
Calapan City sits on the north-east coast of Mindoro, two hours by ferry from Batangas and a morning from Manila. Barangay Malad lies inland of the city: irrigated rice land, coconut, and the Biga River running down off the Halcon range.
The land has been held by one family for a century. The dry end becomes the neighborhood; the balance stays with the family and in cultivation.
